Ataru Kozuru Sculptures

Ataru Kozuru was born in Japan and raised in Boston, U.S.A. He holds a BFA and a Diploma in sculpture from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in affiliation with Tufts University. He is a stone sculptor and visual artist, who is inspired by many elemental forms of stone in nature, from meteorites and mountains to canyons, as well as the many ways in which they have been transformed by the artisans and builders of ancient Menhirs, pyramids, castles, cathedrals and Japanese gardens. Ataru's abstract sculpture combines stone and various medium to create meditative yet energetic space for both outdoor and intimate settings. Kozuru's workexplores such themes as Origins, the natural and the manmade, and the transitory nature of things.

Stone Transformation

Ataru has been using chisel marks and engraved, incised drawings as a part of his stone sculpture. It was a natural process to create a mono-print Sculpture
painting off the incised stone drawings. Each print is one of akind, since the texture of the stone never holds in the same way twice, and I go back and paint with a brush, again it makes a unique image. The relief litho-mono paintings are created by hand from carved raw stone blocks, and so are in close spirit of his sculptures. He feels affinity with various ancient rock carvings in spirit. He also paints free style both on paper and canvas, another approach from the off print method in acrylic evoking abstract imagery of expanding energy in the vast sky of the universe.
